On Tuesday, 28th April, the 9th anniversary of the Garforth Peace Flame, a new Peace Flame monument was unveiled by the Garforth Peace Project alongside guests from local primary schools, counsellors Suzanne McCormack and Sarah Field, the Lord Mayor, and journalists covering East Leeds. Many members of the local community also attended!

Before the Peace Flame display, members of the Peace Project held a talk at St. Benedict’s Catholic Primary School about the work that they have done. They were joined by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Dan Cohen. They also had talks about peace from primary school children from four of the schools that they work with.

Afterwards, the Lord Mayor unveiled the new Peace Flame monument alongside children from the schools, removing a covering that showed the flags of the world. Annie Jones unveiled the lectern. The Peace Flame monument belongs to the community, but was designed and created by Paul Rutherford and his two sons. They also installed the display in the Diamond Jubilee Gardens.

Other attendees included Reverend Andie Shaw, Jane E. Harrison, and one of the founders of the Peace Flame Foundation, Annie Jones.
